In actual fact all motion is relative and it depends on your perspective. In our inertial reference frame, however, (that's the solar system) its easiest to describe the earth as orbiting the sun. All of the planets move around the sun, the earth also spins on its own while circling the sun. It takes twenty four hours for the earth to rotate on its own axis one time, hence on day. It takes the earth aproximatel 365 days to go around the sun one time, hence one year. Your specific position on the earth spends about half its time facing the sun and half turned away from the sun depending on the time of year and your position relative to the equator. When the earth circles the sun it is actually not a perfectly circular orbit, its eliptical meaning that the earth is closer to the sun during some days in its 365 day cycle (summer and spring) and its farther away during other portions of its cyclical orbit (winter, fall)
