Putting things in a container with char coal will get odors out of things.

The books do not have to touch the char coal.

My stamp book smelled horrible, like mildew.

Source(s): I put my stamp collection in ice chests with char coal and left them there for a long time. The odor came out. I took the pages out. Our house had mildew from water damage from a storm. The house was torn down. I saved the stamp collection by putting it in char coal. My mother-in-law told me about the char coal.

Sorry there does not seem to be anything to get rid of that "old book smell". If they are not valuable, dump them. If you feel they have value, try a used book dealer for a few bucks.

Removing is an affair that had better be presided over from time to time exhaustively by the smell

Try opening them and putting them in the sun
