R&P: Let's decide -- What are the best songs of 2009 (Round 1 - Part 5)?
You, the community here at Yahoo! Answers, nominated 350+ songs, your favorites of the year, to face-off in head-to-head battles, tournament style, to determine the best songs of this calendar year.
As always, I ask that you listen to all of the songs... don't vote on name alone. Listen to them, weigh them, and then choose with reason, which song is the better of the two in the given match ups. Star it, and try to get as many voters to this thing as you can.
MATCH UP 1
"Uprising" - Muse
Muse's top-seeded song in the competition. Queen-inspired antics... really, doing Queen better than Queen did on their last album.
"Rise Up and Fight" - Crippled Black Phoenix
A collective of musicians from other post-rock bands making another... less post-rocky band. Dark and obsessed with the end times their styles range from proggy to doom metal.
MATCH UP 2
"Idiot Heart" - Sunset Rubdown
Drumming crescendos, soaring guitars, and catchy, oddball lyrics, as Krug's vocals and keyboards act as a percussive instrument. Nomadic love.
"Insane" - Eminem
not all of these match ups can make sense.
Eminem made a comeback this year.... the world paused to take notice... then continued its journey through space.
MATCH UP 3
"Bible Black" - Heaven & Hel*
metal super group with Dio and Tony Iommi. I ate next to a pair of Tony Iommi's pants at a Hard Rock Cafe once.
'Video Girl" - Amesoeurs
self-described post-punk-inspired black metal from France. Moody with room to breathe....
MATCH UP 4
"Replay" - Iyaz
catchy, if repetitive, but this is the stuff that hits are made of in 09.
"We Lost Sight" - Dälek
Dälek writes yet another "rap isn't what it used to be" song for 2009. There's a lot of this in the underground rap game, but Oktopus, whose production seems equally inspired by the work of My Bloody Valentine, Isis, Mike Patton, Melvins, and Public Enemy, puts a noisy, interesting stamp on it all over MC Dälek's rhymes.
MATCH UP 5
"Fireflies" - Owl City
inspired by Postal Service? Nope.... he's never heard of them...
Passion Pit - "The Reeling"
electronica with a falsetto -- catchy beats, and making a handful of top 10s of the year.
So, which songs are the better of these match ups?
