Great DVDs to watch with 13-year-old girl?

Hi all...I'm a Big Sister to a cool 13-year-old girl. I'm hoping some of you girls around that age can suggest some movies we can watch together (I can stream on Netflix, too). Obviously I'm supposed to be a positive influence, but I don't want to be boring. My goal is for when we watch movies to watch some she might not get to see at home, some that might make her think, or might raise questions that we can discuss later. We can't watch R movies, but I'd like to expose her to some edgy flicks in addition to mainstream stuff. I'd also like movies with strong female characters.

Some info about her: Her parents are recently divorced, she is a middle kid in a HUGE family, she wears only black and is not a girly girl, but this doesn't mean she won't enjoy a good chick flick I think. She hasn't clearly identified her musical preferences, she aspires to sing, and has an interest in Japan and traveling in general. She thinks geocaching is pretty fun and will probably be into more outdoorsy stuff come summer. She's going out for volleyball. She's nice, polite and respectful, and not particularly rebellious at this point. She's not all that into the Harry Potter or Twilight movies but thought Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs was pretty funny and enjoyed A Christmas Carol with Jim Carrey.

I don't care if the movies you suggest are new or old, just GOOD. In fact, some classic movie or even musical suggestions might be kind of unorthodox...

Your thoughts?

If you are thinking about seeing a movie in the theater then maybe The Blind Side or Princess and the Frog.

Other movies already released... Remember the Titans is a great movie even if you don't like football, Maybe Night of the Museum 1 or 2 or one of the National Treasure movies, the new Ice Age movie or Race to Witch Mountain, the Disney's Earth movie was good if she is into animals, not sure how good Hotel for Dogs was. If you are looking at musicals Bye Bye Birdie was a classic and a musical, or Grease too both are great movies. Not sure if Moulin Rouge is a good choice for a musical or not. If you want a seasonal type movie for the Christmas season I'd suggest going with either the Muppets Christmas Carol since she enjoyed the Jim Carey one or even the 1984 Christmas Carol, or The Christmas Story, classic Christmas movie that you gotta watch at least once per year, or more because if you have TBS it is on 12 times in a row for 24 hours of it from 8pm Christmas eve to 8pm Christmas night. Maybe the RV movie could be good. Oh another great musical is The Music Man, I'd go with the more recent one with Matthew Broderick and Kristin Chenoweth, thats the 2003 one. What else, what else... does she like Disney at all? You could always go with some classic Disney movies like Lion King, Aladdin, Toy Story, Mulan or go even more Classic with greats like Cinderella, Snow White or Pinocchio. I'm just trying to pick off movies off the top of my head, I might be striking out left and right with these choices for all I know lol Oh well also strong female character movies... you could try A League of Their Own, its an older movie but one heck of a movie. Maybe a Tomb Raider movie? Not so sure about that one. Batman Returns has a strong female role with Catwoman, if she's into action. Since she's into Japan is she into any foreign films? Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, House of Flying Daggers, Hero or Healing Hearts... not sure if she'd be into any of those, the first ones are action the last one is more or a drama or romance I guess.

On Netflix streaming (I'm looking at the most recent additions since I don't have an account on it)... Mall Cop wasn't too bad, maybe Wall E, Free Willy was a good movie, Muppets Take Manhattan was great, she might be "too old" to enjoy it, but I enjoyed it when I was little. Bedtime Stories, The Boy in the Striped Pajamas was supposed to be good but I never saw it and not sure if she'd like it, Ghostbusters was great, might be too old school for her though.

Honestly there are a ton of movies that are awesome, I'm not really sure if any of these choices are going to be any good for you two to watch together, hopefully you can use at least one or two of my ideas out and be successful. I wish the best of luck for you and her. It's really cool that you are being a Big Sister to her, that's pretty cool.
