New cat owner. Any advice?

I adore animals, I have had all sorts, I had a cat when I was younger, but I can't remember it. I know all about cats but does anyone have any tips? I am getting a long haired tabby kitten, probably either a Miane Coon, Norwegian Forest or a Persian. All advice welcome!

Thanks

I have a Maine Coon. You're going to need one of those metal combs for grooming. If not they can get matted up. Same goes for any long-haired cat.

When you bring the cat home, have its litter box, food and water already set up. Give him/her a few minutes to explore, then show the cat where they are. The litter box should be in an area that is quiet and out of the way. Cats don't like to be disturbed when in the box. Keep the litter the same as what they are used to. Sudden changes can cause big problems. Food and water should not be near the litter area. It would be kind of like eating your dinner in the bathroom. I advise most people to keep kittens in a safe room like a spare bedroom until they are big enough to jump from whatever surfaces there are in your home. Kittens have no fear and think nothing of jumping off of a countertop. They can injure themselves very seriously. We kept ours in the room when we were at work or asleep. If you're home, they can have the run of the place.

Electrical cords, houseplants, paperclips, staples, rubberbands, all sorts of things can be a hazard to a cat. Go through and cat-proof your home.

Cat trees are great for scratching and climbing, you'll at least need a tall scratching post. When you give a cat the proper things to scratch on, they won't go for your furniture.

Get the kitten spayed or neutered no later than 5 or 6 months of age. Many behavioral issues can start if you don't.

First of all long haired cats need daily grooming to prevent painful nots and matting and also to prevent furballs in the stomach, ive had two cats over the years and the can bring joy to a house hold.

You will need to decide wether your cat will be indoor or outdoor, register an appointment with a vet straight after getting your cat. Basic equipment-

    Food + water bowl

    Litter box

    Kitty litter

    Fine tooth comb

    Flea comb

    Wide bristle brush

You will also have to decide wther to have your cat spayed or not.

purina cat meals are awsome, tidy cat works properly, yet organic cat litters are meant to be a technique or the different greater healthy. Cats continuously scratch your fixtures in spite of a submit, yet I rather have introduced in a chunk of hearth wood in the wintry climate and had some achievement, Toys are distinctive looking on your cat. Get a reflective collar in basic terms in case kitty escapes, and function her chipped. Letting an indoor cat exterior once you're out with them engaged on the backyard etc, could properly be very healthy for kitty. And the superb cat hair eliminating structures contain (yet are no longer constrained to) a twig bottle of your well-known liquid fabrics softner diluted properly to spray promptly on rugs and fixtures beforehand wiping dry, and pushing aside the hair, curler tape, puppy hair sponge, and the bissel puppy hair remover or healthy dwelling house vacuum with the puppy hair wands. IF kitty pees in the dwelling house you will get enzymatic cleaners, the quicker you freshen up the greater advantageous and cut back temptations by ability of remaining closet doors and mattress room doors (if there is carpet) and protecting super potted flora up off the floor..:)

I wouldnt recommend a persian to a novice cat owner as they are very dominant.

Out of your choices a Marie Coon is possible easiest to care for. They are much more laid back and friendly.

NEVER play with your kitten with hands or feet. My rescued Ragdoll cat has terrible habits because of this and bites you out of the blue.

Try to use the same litter the kitten is used to as this will make litter habits easier.

Introduce the kitten to as many things as possible early on, especially grooming as well as various household items, other animals or people to try and keep them socialised and confident.

Cats need injected against various diseases including cat flu but your vet will advise you further.

PLEASE NEUTER YOUR CAT! Feline Aids is on the rise due to irresponsible owners, it will potentially save their life.

Spend as much time as you can handling and brushing your cat to keep them healthy, if you choose to let her out do it in stages. dont just open the door and hope for the best.

Cats are fantastic pets and you will have many years of pleasure with them given you care for them.

Keep your cat indoors unless on a leash or you have a secure outdoor cat enclosure. The biggest mistake I made with my first cat was letting him outside--there are so many dangers out there, even if you don't think something will happen, even if it never has before, it always can.

Brush it a lot- longhairs mat easily, and the brushing will minimize shedding.

It will probably be scared when you first bring it home, so let it have its own quiet place near food, water, and a litter box.

Lastly, some advice to save your cat pain and you many angry answers- when your cat looks sick, take it to the vet immediately.
