Why did Joe Dimaggio's teammates call him "Big Dago"?

What is the significance of "Dago"?

    Dago back then wasn't the pejorative it is now and, obviously, was used affectionately here for the Italian descended DiMaggio. Phil Rizzuto was "Little Dago".

    Maybe because he was Italian. That's what dago refers to.

    Back in the 50s. they did not have sensitivity training.

    So words like that and offensive categorization of race and creed were blatent.

    But Joe D was called 'Joe D and the Chairman of the Board.
