In the chemical formula H2O, what's the name for the number "2"?

Subscript, since normally it is to the right and bottom in tiny font of H. Sub is under while Super is over so it's easier to keep track of it that way. It also indicates how many of those atoms you have in a compound.

The number two is called a subscript, because it is after the element. If it was in front of the element it would be called a coefficient.Source(s): My chemistry class
