What is the source of energy that produces steam?

i need help on my science homework and just cant find the answer!

    Mostly, steam is produced by burning something to create higher temperatures and then adding water. The water turns to steam. I am not sure how the steam powers the steam engine.

    Heat produced from: Nuclear, Coal, Oil, Gas, Wood, Cow chips, Trash, the earth (Geothermal), The sun (Solar), etc. etc.
