It would appear to me that less persons choke on food and die, than previously. The reason being that more people have been trained in the Heimlich Maneuver, and there are more rescue kits available in public places. The fish issue is related but not the same. If a person swallows the bone it may pierce the intestinal tract, and create a danger of peritonitis if for example, fecal material can also enter. I , myself saw two adults and 1 child choke to death and it was really sad
Of course the precautions that must be taken are, not talking while eating, not eating on the run,and swallowing some soft bread to make the bone less sharp. It is estimated that approximately
3000 adults and 66 children die from choking in one year in the US
What is needed is to train more people in life saving techniques and increase the speed in taking victims to the ER
Consumers Union, Amer Pediatric Association.
