Opened in 1973, Grasberg Mine in Indonesia is the world's largest gold mine
and the third largest copper mine. This industrial eyesore, nestled in
the mountains of Papua, employs an astonishing 19,500 people. It is
majority owned through a subsidiary of an American company. The mining
operation was government approved. In 1977, the mine was attacked by the Free Papua Movement, an anti-government group.
