During the winter the only road open to cars is the road from the north entrance to Mammoth Hot Springs, and then from there across the northern end of the park to the northeast entrance. Road conditions tend to be icey. The main draw here is the amazing wildlife- elk, wolves, etc.
The only way to see the rest of the park is by snowcoach or guided rental snowmobile. You can sort of see Old Faithful in one day (the snow vehicles are very slow) but most people stay overnight or longer at the Old Faithful Snow Lodge.
Last year, the snow lodge, and the snow vehicles, were open for business until mid-march. It can vary from year to year. The best websites to check up on are ww.nps.gov/yell and www.travelyellowstone.com (the park concessionaire). Reservations far in advance are advised.
