    I think is is to entertain, if you mean choosing out of to persuade, inform, or entertain. It's fiction, and it doesn't appear to be made to persuade, so I'm left with to entertain, since it is a novel.

    the purpose was to show the meaning of living. the garden was abandoned due to a previous death, and the family was depressed. the father was depressed, and the son was considered to be a handicapped person. the rejuvenation of the garden represents the healing process of grief. the girl, the gardener, and the boy helped bring the garden back to life. the handicapped boy was discovered to not be handicapped and helped relieve the father's depression.
