Is the premise of the 2012 movie plausible~Can neutrinos sent by a solar flare super heat the Earth's core?
If that were real, it would take much longer for it to really cool down right? Not a month or so, but years~even decades?
What about the satellites orbiting Earth, would they crash and burn, or just orbit with useless electrical panels? The Electric grids here would be trashed too I'm guessing.
Kasssidy~(I can't believe that I JUST NOW got that about Yellowstone, after I read your answer~, the core was heating up and that is what caused the volcanos to errupt) DUH~ I can't believe that I missed that. (I assumed it was from the plates moving!) .....I liked Woody Harrleson too! :0)

Neutrinos don't come from solar flares, they come from nuclear reactions in the Sun's core.
In addition, they do not react with matter very much at all.
Supernova 1987A, the closest one to Earth in 400 some years released a flood of neutrinos, according to theory. Twenty four of them were detected while the event was most active.
Now I don't know how big the detectors are in relation to the Earth as a whole, but the factor is probably in the millions. So at a guess, say 240 million neutrinos from 1987A interacted with the Earth. If you know the energy of a neutrino, you can make a ballpark estimate of the amount of heat released. You would probably have trouble getting enough to make a cup or two of instant coffee.
Just a back of the envelope guess. Could be wrong, maybe you could make twenty cups, maybe less than one. Does not amount to much, either way.
What goes on at the surface of the Sun probably does not have a lot to do with what is happening at the core at the time.
Solar flares are expected, satellites are built to withstand expected conditions. The people who insure them will insist on that.

When they were dreaming up the plot for the film, they wanted to make sure they didn't use an existing crackpot doomsday theory for 2012 in case the relevant crackpot should somehow imagine that their pet theory had been given some credibility. So they had to come up with an all-new equally crackpot theory so the solar neutrinos idea was born. Rest assured that it's equally as stupid as all the others and is in contradiction of basic physics.
Solar neutrinos are passing through you right at this moment. Even if it's night-time they are doing so because they pass right through the Earth. They do not heat up its core and never will. As Scotty of Star Trek used to say, "Ye cannae change the laws of physics."

No. Neutrinos interact so weakly with matter that almost all of them go straight through the earth without even slowing down. We have had to build enormous detectors, filling caves with liquid, in order to capture just a few neutrinos per day from the absolutely staggering number that are emitted by the sun.
Since we have to go through enormous lengths even to detect a neutrino, the effect on the earth's core or a satellite is unmeasurable.

Trillions of neutrinos go through your body every second. Trillions of trillions of trillions of neutrinos go through the core of the earth every second. nothing happens. neutrinos are like that. nothing except several light years of lead can shield anything from them. The sun puts out neutrinos as a result of the fusion reactions going on in its core. Solar flares do not generate ANY neutrinos. Solar flares move much slower than neutrinos (which travel at the speed of light).
The movie 2012 was a piece of crap-science-hollywood-scare-ya-for two-hours-so-we-can-make- money- movie. Entertainment only (and poor entertainment for anyone with an education) and no plausible basis in fact.

John L Casey NASA CEO Scientist has predicted a decrease in soalr activity which will indeed cause earthquakes and a mini ice age of severe cases over the next 30 years. He advises people to start stalking up now because the crops will go the economy and electric will go and have a way to defend your food. It's on you tube the interview with him. So the 2012 film isn't so far fetched the bit I liked was the kids names Noah and Lilie. Days of noah will be like the days of Liliths end of days end of all flesh but The nasa guy didn't say its the end just a 30 cold cycle ice age which will kill many people but no one will listen until the last min when the crops go and the chaos begins start stalking up now people.

Gee that many. That's like about as much as the sun normally emits in a whole second! Don't you just love the way that the media camps everything up. Apparently we are supposed to be in a permanent state of high melodrama as we lurch from one peril to the next in between pepsi commercials! When the newsreaders are all scowling furiously at the camera telling you how shocked you should be, make sure you go outside and look up. There will be a spectacular and beautiful aurora display. Don't miss it. Cheers!

lol that movie was pulled out of some guys ***. if those neutrinos could superheat the earths core why wouldn't they do the same thing to the atmosphere and crust of the earth.

FAKE, Impossible, junk science.
Just Hollywood making a disaster movie.

the flare is more likely to burn holes in the earths amosphere and then burn us, but yes it could heat up the earths core and yeah it would take a long time for the yellowstine thing to happen and stuff. The satellites are going to crash and burn at some point in time anyway. im not quite sure what would happen to them. but i know they would be stupid and only save the rich people and goverment people and a lot of people would burn and drown and be crush and he orld would go into choas if anyone found out.
My favorite character was the weird radio guy :)

You do know this is a work of fiction? And an idiotic one at that? It's not a documentary.
