Serious question for Christians?

I know you await the 'second coming' of Jesus - what I'm curious about is how will you know it's him? This is a serious question - will it be through what he *does*?

It can't be how he looks, right? Because nobody alive would have known him, so nobody will recognise him?

***Will there be disagreements between the various Christian denominations as to whether it's really Jesus or not?

Serious and clear answers much appreciated :)

It is expected that at Jesus' coming, his appearance will be undisputable. He will not be born as a child, but appear in splendor as a King followed by the hosts of heaven--so that's a pretty big clue right there. :)

But it's what happens to earth and humanity that matters after his coming: evil will be put down, the earth reborn as it was meant to be, the faithful will be rewarded and the kingdom of God will reign with peace and righteousness.

As for disagreements between denominations...I don't see how there would be, but one mustn't underestimate the ability of Christians to disagree!

Add--I don't understand why some people are criticizing this question. It is a perfectly respectful question asked in a spirit of seeking understanding, and we should be happy to answer!

    >> what I'm curious about is how will you know it's him?

First let's deal with how a person can know that it is *NOT* Jesus Christ. I bring this up because the Bible says there will be a final antichrist whom will personate Him, sit in the holy place saying that he is God (2Thes. 2:3,4), and will perform miracles which will deceive (if possible) even the very elect (Mat. 24:24).

Thus, there are at least two things this final antichrist will do which will definitively mark him as an impostor. First, he will walk this earth (Mat. 24:23). Meaning, his feet will touch the ground the same as yours or mine. Second, he will declare that he did do away with the Seventh-day [Saturday] Sabbath and that Sunday is the correct Christian Sabbath (Isa. 8:20). Thus, yes, there will absolutely be disagreements between Christian denominations as to whether that person is Jesus Christ, or not. Meaning, the very elect will *NOT* be deceived; but, *MOST* of Christianity *WILL* be deceived (Mat. 7:13).

So, in conclusion... The True Jesus Christ will come in the clouds such that not only every living eye will see Him up in the clouds, but there will also be a special resurrection of all those involved in His Crucifixion 2,000 years ago so that they, too, will see Him in the process of coming in all His glory (Rev. 1:7). And when He gets here, all of the wicked living and those raised in the special resurrection will be destroyed by the brightness of His Coming (2Thes. 2:8). He will also not touch foot to this sinful earth for the righteous dead will first be raised from their graves and then, together, they and the righteous living will be caught up from this earth to meet Jesus Christ in the air (1Thes. 4:16-18).

    God bless.

Jesus taught that his second coming would be unmistakable. Matt 24:27-31:

For as lightning that comes from the east is visible even in the west, so will be the coming of the Son of Man. Wherever there is a carcass, there the vultures will gather.

"Immediately after the distress of those days, 'the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light; the stars will fall from the sky, and the heavenly bodies will be shaken.'

"At that time the sign of the Son of Man will appear in the sky, and all the nations of the earth will mourn. They will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of the sky, with power and great glory. And he will send his angels with a loud trumpet call, and they will gather his elect from the four winds, from one end of the heavens to the other."

HOWEVER, given that obstinate minded people will disagree about the Holocaust or the reality of the 1969 moon landing, there will undoubtedly be dissent.

    Cheers,

    (1) How will people know it's him - will it be through what he does? How will anybody recognise him because nobody alive would have known him?

Matthew 24:29-31: "Immediately after the distress of those days "the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light; the stars will fall from the sky, and the heavenly bodies will be shaken.' (Isaiah 13:10; 34:4) At that time the sign of the Son of Man will appear in the sky, and all the nations of the earth will mourn. They will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of the sky, with power and great glory. And he will send his angels with a loud trumpet call, and they will gather his elect from the four winds, from one end of the heavens to the other." (Also Mark 13:26)

Matthew 26:64: "Yes, it is as you say," Jesus replied. "But I say to all of you: In the future you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One and coming on the clouds of heaven."

Luke 21:25-27: "There will be signs in the sun, moon and stars. On the earth, nations will be in anguish and perplexity at the roaring and tossing of the sea. Men will faint from terror, apprehensive of what is coming on the world, for the heavenly bodies will be shaken. At that time they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory."

1 Thessalonians 4:16-17: "For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God and the dead in Christ will rise first. After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air."

Revelation 1:7-8: "Look, he is coming with the clouds, and every eye will see him, even those who pierced him; and all the peoples of the earth will mourn because of him. So shall it be! Amen. I am the Alpha and the Omega, says the Lord God, who is, and who was, and who is to come, the Almighty."

I don't think anybody will be in any doubt as to who it is that comes, because of the earth-shattering and cataclysmic events that will accompany his arrival.

    (2) Will there be disagreements between the various Christian denominations as to whether it's really Jesus or not?

Yes, because the anti-Christ will deceive many, and not just Christians, as Fiona M points out.

One answer quoted from a Watchtower magazine to give the Jehovah's Witness point of view about the second coming but fell short of saying they believe this second coming has already taken place in 1914 and that it was invisible. Only they 'saw with eyes of understanding' (and with hindsight) what nobody else did - that Christ Jesus took up his heavenly throne and has already started to reign. Christ Jesus, they say, will not be returning to earth. To my knowledge, this viewpoint is not shared by any Christian denomination.

Whatever opinions people hold on this subject, the Bible makes it very clear that when Christ Jesus returns, with the angels, every knee will bow and nobody will be in any doubt as to who he is and why he has returned.

Personally, I think it is futile to speculate on 'end-time matters'. All that does is to cause divisions and to take people's minds away from the good news of the gospel message which is all about pointing people to Christ Jesus as Lord and Saviour. There is little to be gained in spending time wondering about the when and the how (because no man knows the day or the hour). Rather, Christians should be living each day as if the Lord was going to return tonight - walking in faith and in the assurance that God's timing and God's justice are perfect.

    Very good series of questions!

I`ll do my best to share with you what I have learnt.

Q 'How will you know its him?'

A There is no comparrisson, it will be an event no-one can miss, It will be a worldstopping, awesome decent through the clouds, but the arrival is seen in the east first of all. A cloud seen in the East the size of a mans hand and will increase in size. A scene only worthy glory, filling the skies with heavenly angels all moving close to earth with the decent of Christ Himself who has left heavens realm to return to earth to ressurect and collect His redeemed.

Hollywood tried to express on the big screne the kind of idea ( something even more jaw dropping than those massive mother ships breaking through the clouds on 'Independance Day' the movie...)

Christs second coming is described in techicolor and detail. It is not vague, nor open to interpretation!

Let me list the events which will happen from scripture (NT, and the revelations given to believers are believed to be given by the Spirit of God to man)

    1.Great Deception.

Christs coming will be immitated by the great deceiver. He will try to claim a manifestation of Christ and claim all glory as his.

    Matthew 24

23 Then if any man shall say unto you, Lo, here is Christ, or there; believe it not.

24 For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall shew great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect.

26 Wherefore if they shall say unto you, Behold, he is in the desert; go not forth: behold, he is in the secret chambers; believe it not.

27 For as the lightning cometh out of the east, and shineth even unto the west; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.

    2. His coming is Heavenly not growing up on earth a man then revealing Himself..no. He will decend as heavenly King accompanied by the heavenly Host."When the Son of man shall come in his glory, and all the holy angels with him, then shall he sit upon the throne of his glory." Matthew 25:31.

The Scriptures promise that Jesus will return to this earth in the same manner that He left at His ascension--in a visible, literal, bodily, personal manner. Matthew 24:30 says, "They shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory." He will come in the clouds literally, as a personal being with a body of flesh and bones (Luke 24:36-43, 50, 51), and His coming will be visible. Scripture is clear on these facts.

    3. He will decend with a voice of an arc angel to raise the dead! No other counterfiet can do this!

"For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven ... and the dead in Christ shall rise first: Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord." 1 Thessalonians 4:16, 17. "We shall all be changed, ... and the dead shall be raised incorruptible. For ... this mortal must put on immortality." 1 Corinthians 15:51-53. "We look for ... the Lord Jesus Christ: Who shall change our vile body, that it may be fashioned like unto his glorious body." Philippians 3:20, 21.

    4. He will not touch the earth at His second Coming!

Note that Jesus does not touch the earth at His second coming. The saints meet Him "in the air." So God's people will ignore any report that Christ is in Baltimore, New Orleans, Los Angeles, etc. False christs will appear and do miracles on the earth (Matthew 24:23-27), but Jesus will remain in the clouds above the earth at His second coming.

You are right.recognising Christ can`t be how he looks for we have no pictures, but it can be how it is descibed, His actions on His arrival in the heavens, the ressurection, His commanding vice to raise the dead to life, and the sheer glory!

Yes there will be major disagreements between the various denominations as to whether its really Christ or not if they don`t know the signs of the real Christ! The great deceiver is known by Christians as Satan, will immitate Christ, he will be seen performing miracles all over the world and many will fal for the hype! Muslims will see him as Isa, Christians wil see him as Christ, and Jews will see him as the long awaited for Messiah! He could even bring peace and safety in the world for a short period because the world will experience great tribulation prior to his arrival! He could heal, and perform great feits.

He will be all things to all men! But he will not be the true Christ.

Only those who recognise the signs of the false Christ will continue to look for the signs of the coming of Jesus in the Heavens. Then won`t the world get a shock if they are looking in the opposite direction at the counterfeit.

Its all very dramatic but thats exactly how its gonna pan out.

I have heaps more details if you wish to ask further. :)

    Matthew 24:27

For as the lightning cometh out of the east, and shineth even unto the west; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.

    Luke 17:24

For as the lightning, that lighteneth out of the one part under heaven, shineth unto the other part under heaven; so shall also the Son of man be in his day.

The heavens are to roll up like a scroll, when He appears with His angels to gather His elect from the four corners of the earth, and every eye shall see HIm.

  • Everyone will know. He shall come as the judge of the universe.

This leads right into the ultra-orthodox and the Rapture people working together in Israel. Talk about strange bedfellows.
