    Not as a matter of principle, but yes, the US has taken action that was not authorized by the SC, and has also supported action by others that was not authorized by the SC.

    An example of the first (US taking action) would be the invasion of Iraq. The Security Council authorized the occupation of Iraq after the fact (UN Resolution 1546), but the initial invasion was not authorized.

    An example of the second (US supporting action by another country that was not authorized by the SC) would be the US supporting Ethiopia's 2006 invasion of Somalia.
