Copper-Zinc Alloys

Zinc is by far the most popular allying addition to copper, with the resulting alloys being known as brasses. If the copper content is not over 36%, the brass is a single-phase solid solution. They are quire ductile and formable, these characteristics increasing with tie zinc content up to about 36%. Cartridge brass, the 70% copper-30% zinc alloy, offers the best combination of strength and ductility, and is quite popular for sheet-forming operations such as deep drawing

Most brasses have good corrosion resistance. In the 0 to 40% zinc region, the addition of a small amount of tin imparts improved resistance to seawater corrosion. Cartridge brass with tin becomes admiralty brass; Muntz metal with tin is called naval brass.

Many uses of brass relate to the high electrical and thermal conductivities coupled with useful engineering strength. Plating characteristics are excellent and make the mate-rial an excellent base for decorative chrome or similar coatings.

When high machinability is required, as with automatic screw machine stock, 2 to 3% lead is added to the brass to ensure the formation of free-breaking chips. Brass casting alloys are quite popular for use in plumbing fixtures, low-pressure valves, and a variety of decorative hardware.

Copper-Tin Alloys

The true tin bronzes usually contain less than 12% tin. Strength continues to increase as tin is added, up to about 20%, but the high-tin alloys tend to be brittle. The copper-tin bronzes offer good strength, toughness, wear resistance, and corrosion resistance. They are often used for bearings, gears, and fittings that are subjected to heavy compressive loads. When the copper-tin alloys are used for bearing applications, up to 10% lead is often added.
