Why is Holocaust denial a crime in certain countries?

There's no such thing as an absolute fact, which is why scientific theories are constantly tested again and again.

Update:

America is a free country, so we have the right to talk openly and freely about intellectual matters, and so it is impossible for a historical event to be censored completely, but just imagine if it was illegal to deny the American revolution, or to deny the civil war. Imagine if we had to, by law, not deny any of the established facts on these events. That would be the very definition of extremism devoid of any research of the possibility of critical thinking.

In some Europeans countries, Holocaust denial is a crime. If you claim that 5.9 million Jews were killed instead of 6 million, you could go to jail. Or if you wrote a book expressing your views on the holocaust, even if you cited historical documents, or even the Nuremberg trials, you would still get harassed because you are questioning what some people believe are divine facts. Does this not go against everything that science stands for: continuous examination of a theory to make it better and better? How are people supposed to do that when it is a crime to pose conflicting views about it?

Imagine if it was illegal to say that Christopher Columbus was not the first person to discover America, and so whenever someone asked how those "Indians" got there, they would get sent to jail for presenting evidence that conflicts the established creed of Columbus being the first to discover America.

Denying the Holocaust in the Federal Republic of Germany is a crime, and I would like to say, for obvious reasons.

Untrue is that it is a crime to say 5.9 million Jews died instead of 6 million. It was 6 million Holocaust victims, and not all of the were Jews, which is doing an unjustice to Gypsies (Roma Folk), homosexuals, political dissidents, and basic petty criminals.

However making statements that the "holocaust is not true" or "over-exaggerated", and claiming like one English book author, that only 100,000 people died in concentration camps is a social slap in the face for all people who suffered.

The reason that it is a crime to deny the holocaust is because it supports facistic ideology, by be-littling the crimes the Nazis committed to the point of "harmlessness". If this ideology is spun further, then they extend their logic that the "few" people who were put in concentration camps "deserved it" anyway, and the Nazis were not really as bad as they were.

In modern times, it would be like saying Guantanamo is really just a "Girl Scout Camp", and I don't get what the fuss is all about.

The holocaust is listed in the German penal code as a crime of "Volksverhetzung", which means "incitement for sedition". Denying the holocaust is not an intellectual discussion; it is political ideology to relativise Nazi crime into meaningless history footnote pettiness, with the ultimate intended justification of "they got what they deserved anyway".

This is why denying the Holocaust, the Hitler salute, public display of swastikas other than in historical exihibitions or on pre-1948 literature, wearing Nazi uniforms other than for film or documentary purposes, and propagation of National Socialism are misdemeanor crimes in Germany.

Your logical allegory about Christopher Columbus is a non-sequator.

What an interesting idea, make it illegal to be ignorant. However, it would be unfeasibly restrictive and therefore impossible. Ignorance is rampant worldwide and restrictions on ignorance would create a bottleneck for new ideas. I believe the world tried this a few times and it didn't work out. Maybe not so directly and restrictive as the example in my head, yet it was done. However wouldn't it be interesting to make holocaust denial into a hate crime. This is both feasible and permissible as I understand the hate crime legislation. It is no more ridiculous than a school district removing the word Christmas from Christmas carols to prevent people from being offended. Good questions. It is something to think about.

Well, the Holocaust was much worse than the civil war, because it was slaughter of innocents. It is not a "theory" or a "divine fact," it really DID happen, not like Columbus "discovering the Americas," everyone knows the native Americans were there first. Remember past mistakes to not repeat them.

More importantly why do you care?

OK. Everyone here who thinks the holocaust is a hoax can visit Auschwitz in Poland and see everything except the bodies. Actually you can see the bodies too. There is a nearby lake with a bed permanently grey with the ash of cremated bodies. Auschwitz itself has been perfectly preserved because someone had the weird idea that some people might forget, and possibly even choose to say it didn't happen.

Germany is the only usa i'm actual constructive of as they are the time-honored ones who have been announcing, Oh, no, that under no circumstances exceeded off. My terrific information is that for the time of Germany, in case you even say that it under no circumstances exceeded off, there is detention center time. i could additionally check out Hungary because of the fact the Hungarians have been tremendously twisted for the time of WWII to boot. something exciting you're able to no longer understand or undergo in innovations. undergo in innovations a year or so in the past while Israel went to conflict against Lebanon? while "they" have been attempting to broking provider a peace deal between the two countries, somebody had the remarkable theory to deliver UN troops to patrol the borders and "they" asked the Germans to kick in some troops to the reason. Germany pronounced, Uh, Hell No. because of the fact of what we did to the Jews for the time of WWII, we are forbidden by employing regulation to convey any militia something against them for any reason, ever. Most countries don't have a tradition of freedom of speech and have no respect for the idea. They support Orwellian style thought control.

We're quickly heading the same way if we don't get the authoritarian socialists out of power.

its to stop fascists from gaining power, if we (uk) had gone down the same road as france or germany, nick griffon (BNP party leader) would be in jail than running for prime minister.
