the M1911 .45 ACP used to be carried, but now the standard issue weapon for all branches of the U.S. Military is the Beretta Model 92F 9mm. Not as much stopping power (ok with hollow points, but hollow points are outlawed in warfare per the Geneva Conventions), but the trade off is high capacity magazines and lower recoil for better follow on shots.

Most the Military Police and Provost Marshalls carry the M9, which is a 9mm Beretta 92fs. However, Marine Corps Security Forces carry the M9, as well the H&K USP Tactical .40 S&W

9mm. Some special operations units have .45 caliber weapons in their armories, but average joe serviceman will be carrying a 9mm.

the standard is the 9mm, but some police forces (to include the DOD Police are starting to carry the 40 Cal because of the stopping power)
