I know you need a reliable vehicle....what else do you need??
Also how could I break into amateur storm chasing?

Before you consider breaking into storm chasing, i would consider one very important thing. You will spend more time sitting and waiting for storms than you will actually see a storm.
Not only am I a National Weather Service SKYWARN Spotter (TW-001-WA) But I also Storm Chaser as a hobby.
Here are a number of links to check out to assist in becoming a storm chaser. Also two other things to consider. Go with a professional Tour Group and take a NWS Skywarn Training Class.

- Documentation tools
- Weather monitoring products
- Navigational tools

- Communication items
My current list of chasing equipment is as follows:
* Yaesu FT-8900R Quadband Ham radio
* Yaesu FT-8000R 2m/440 Ham radio
* Yaesu FT-530 HT 2m/440 Ham radio
* Uniden CB w/ Weather Radio
* SkyWatch Meteos Handheld Cup Anemometer
* Uniden Bearcat Scanner / Weather Radio (BCT12)
* Garmin 12MAP GPS
* DeLorme Earthmate GPS
* Oregon Scientific All Hazards NOAA Weather Radio (WR-8000)
* SkyScan Handheld Lightning Detector
Additionally, I currently use my Dell Inspiron 8600 laptop for weather analysis and mobile data acquisition. My Nokia 6160i connects to my laptop, which allows me to dial into an ISP while mobile. I frequently use Digital Atmosphere, SwiftWX, and other weather processing programs to help me get to where I need to be.
Good luck and hope these links help.

Also you'd want a wireless internet capabilities, like a 3G Laptop Connect Card for radar. You'd need a Camera or Video Camera as well. GPS would be nice too.
