    it depends on the definition of modern

    bi-metal springs were very popular in the 1970

    before that it was a mercury switch

    now it is a micro-controller with very complex algorithm

    for some time, there were electronic thermostats

    the sensing device was often a thermistor, it is a resistor whose value changes with temperature

    more sophisticated ones used a PN junction
