Dienbienphu, the situation was not as simple as : they got kicked out by the local. France was not fighting only Vietnam war (as we did 10 years later..) but Indochina war, they had for ennemies Cochichin ( actual Vietnam) Laos, Cambodia, Tonking, Anman,.. names you never heard before.
French soldiers , greatly outnumbered, were still winning most of the battles, but back in France, the people didn't care about their colonies, they wanted the war to end, they have seen to many battles and dead the last decades. So the government afraid to open the door of a new revolution didn't send more troops and let the few already there fighting alone. Then came Dienbienphu, outnumberd 8 to 1, the French lost 3000 men and killed more than 20 000, they fought one of the longest and most dreadfull battle known in mordern history. Due to the bad weather they couldn't get air support, nor get supplies, they lacked of food and were living in the worst hygienic conditions, most of soldiers were sick but still fought their ennemies. They fought 2 months untill they had no anmunition. After this battle, French government, by the will of the people, ended the war. It will basically happen the same for the US in Vietnam 10 years later. This image that frogs give up without a fight is the product of ignorance. Determination they displayed at Dien Bien Phu despite the lost cause, fighting to the written end is the perfect example of that spirit you tend to demolish with your stupid jokes and stereotypes.
