What's so great about Capitalism?

it's got a major flaw, the richest 1% has more money than the bottom 95% combined, that means, take away all the jib jab about everything and look at what is actually happening, a small minority are living like kings while a huge minority tend to their every need.

and now these 1% make even more money by paying lobbyists to legally bribe politicans to vote for their interests.

Update:

Wrath > i see what you mean, but isn't it flawed in our democracy, for the richest one percent to be able to legally bribe politicians to vote in their favor, and the richest 1% is able to put their hand so far into the political system that it corrupts it.

Well whats so great about socialism?

Those who are rich pay most of the taxes in America, and usually they're the ones who help stimulate the economy by spending money and giving money to charities. For the poor majority well most of them are living off of welfare and if anything they're the ones who are being treated like queen and kings. Which by the way comes from the tax payers pockets. Oh yeah and who pays most of the taxes? If your going to be angry, you should be upset with the people who voted our commie president into office. Our economy wasn't that great in the first place and now its on the verge of collapse.

I cannot for the life of me understand how so many young people have grown up with this idea of class envy. Every damned one of your political heroes is wealthy beyond your Imagination and the only wealthy you see and despise are those of us ordinary people who get up every day and go to work to make a living and earn as much as we can so we can have whatever we desire. THAT IS AND HAS ALWAYS BEEN THE AMERICAN DREAM! It's why people from all over the world come here sometimes at great danger to participate in that dream. You have become one of those who have been convinced by those who would enslave you to an entitlement mentality into thinking wealth is bad while ignoring those with wealth who put that garbage into your brain.

Without capitalism, you wouldn't be sitting in your comfortable home and typing on your nice expensive computer and using it on the internet while watching cable tv and walking across nice carpet to a well stocked refrigerator full of sodas, snacks, and food.

If you think the federal government is going to provide all that for you by taxing the rich into oblivion, you are sadly mistaken. You need to grow up and do a little study of history both American and world and learn what a great country this is and has always been but people with your mindset are determined to make it like those countries that people are fleeing everyday to get here. No system is perfect and never will be but here in this country you can do anything you want and be anything you want if you have the desire and work toward your goals. It doesn't come free or easy and you won't always succeed but the great thing is that you can dust yourself off and try again and possibly succeed. The history of this country is full of people who tried, failed, tried again and succeeded. Some, actually many made it on the first try. You too can be a Bill Gates or a Warren Buffet or even a Sam Walton if you want to.

To understand a capitalist economy you must first have a basic understanding of economics. In his book "Basic Economics: A Citizen's Guide to the Economy" Thomas Sowell quoted British economist Lionel Robbins who defined economics: "Economics is the study of the use of scarce resources which have alternative uses."

In a market-directed (capitalist) economy those scarce resources are directed to their most efficient use. Thanks to Henry Ford the manufacture of horse-drawn buggies and wagons all but disappeared.

Computers with word processing programs eliminated the typewriter industry. Retailing giants like Walmart siphoned scarce resources away from small, inefficient retailers. Studebaker couldn't sell a sufficient number of cars to be profitable so the scarce resources they were using inefficiently went to GM, Ford and Chrysler. Have you noticed the virtual disappearance of CRT (cathode ray tube) televisions and computer monitors?

Do you really believe that a Henry Ford or Andrew Carnegie or Bill Gates could exist in a non-capitalist country?

Capitalism is all about the willing transactions made daily by consumers and sellers, employers and employees. If you can go to one fast-food joint and get a cheeseburger, fries and drink for a $1.99 and another fast-food joint has the same thing for $2.49 which will you choose? If you think you're worth a $100,000.00 a year but employers think your worth is closer to $30,000.00 what are your options? Work for what the market dictates or starve?

Read Sowell's book. Then read his "Economic Facts & Fallacies".

Capitalism has worked reliably for close to ten thousand years. Over all, people have earned what they wanted based on their efforts and smarts. You cannot name another system that has worked, without failing and people suffering for it, for even 1/20th of the time that capitalism has worked. Every other system has failed, always! If you like the idea of your economic system failing and millions suffering and dying for it, then you could look to other systems. I don't personally like creating failures.

do you like that computer you're on? this website you've connected to? the electricity that powers the computer? pretty much everything you own or use? you can thank capitalism; socialism has produced exactly NOTHING...except abject shared poverty

what people whining about rich people fail to get thru their heads is that capitalism has a built-in mechanisms for anyone to improve their material lot in life-namely, rewards for hard work, creativity, imagination, and risk-taking-no one walked up to bill gates and gave him a check because they thought he deserved it-he earned it

    whiners will never be winners

So that ultra rich 1% is a result of capitalism in your eyes. You don't see the difference in free markets for all and corporatism?

Capitalism is pretty much the way of the world since forever. Prowl the streets of the market district in Egypt and witness primitive capitalism in its essence. It is as it should be. I have something I produce or simply possess and I am free to sell it for all I can get in the market.

This is actually Corporatism, I'd be in favor of a new sort of Capitalism where Corporations were outlawed, or had to follow very strict regulations to make them servants of the public good somehow, but your regular Joe having the freedom to own property and run a business, I'm 100% in favor of that.

(you're right, the Corporations own the Government, that's why Communism/Socialism/Whateverism won't work either, because no matter what, the global elite will still own everything, they'll just call it something else)

Capitalism is freedom. Under the freedom of capitalism, the free movement of money between free p[eople, there is no limit on your pursuit for wealth. But , it may come as a shock to you, but most people limit themselves. If you want the wealth of Bill Gates, do what he did.But socialism is the force of government deciding who gets what.Insteade of just being there to enforce laws that would protect the rightful owners of money and property. Not force one who planted seeds of wealth to give to those who planted nothing but their backsides on a couch to watch Oprah all day.

Capitalism creates wealth. What do you want us to do? Throw rich people in prison like they do in Russia? Capitalism has it's flaws but it beats everything else out there. Hands down.
