Why does Israel play in the UEFA and Australia in the AFC?

Clearly Israel is part of Asia and Australia is clearly part of Oceania (OFC).

    1. The Arabs kicked the Israelis out of the AFC, and UEFA picked them up.

    2. The Aussies decided to rejoin their old confed, and the AFC are more than happy to have a talented and monied footballing nation amongst them.

Further to the first answer, Australia were way too good for the OFC section but it was actually proving harder for them to qualify for the World Cup that way. As the OFC section was so weak, there was no way in Hades that FIFA was going to give that continent an automatic qualifying place as it would have been the equivalent of giving the Aussies a bye every time. So they always had to go into a playoff and it usually meant having to play a European or South American team much better than them. Now they're playing in the AFC they're actually far more likely to qualify as demonstrated by their walking through the campaign this time around despite having to play several decent teams along the way - compare to the last several World Cups where they've always failed, bar the last one where they only scraped by on penalties.
