  • Not sure that all used the same weapon. I have known 2 men that served as crew during WWII AAC, they had the S & W .38.

The Victory Model was also used by United States forces during WWII, being chambered in the well-known and popular .38 Special cartridge. The Victory Model was a standard-issue sidearm for US Navy and Marine aircrews, and was also used by guards at factories and defense installations throughout the United States during the war. Some of these revolvers remained in service well into the 1990s with units of the US Armed Forces, including the Coast Guard.

In Germany during the 70's the helo pilots were packing the .38. From the looks of them they had been used in WWII, Korea and Viet Nam.

The official handgun of the US Army was the 1911A1 Colt 45 ACP. US combat pilots were in the Army (US Army Air Force). So if they carried a gun, it was that one. To carry anything else could have caused an ammo problem.

Most pilots didn't carry anything. However, among those that did carry a sidearm, the Colt M1911 "Colt .45" was the most popular. Revolvers and submachine guns such as the grease gun were also popular.
