"Church" marriages are a covenant. Atheists would not want to have their marriage take place in a Church even though one genius here said they go to the same place EVERYONE else does....a patently obvious false statement.

A justice of the peace or other civil "marriage officiant" is not concerned with the covenant aspect of witnessing a marriage.

Although they MAY ask the traditional questions: " for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health, to death do you part"....they are only legally concerned that you INTEND to marry the other person. That's all the law generally asks of them. They are the state's witness that 2 unique individuals expressed their desire to marry each other. What that marriage is supposed to entail is generally not their concern. However, in practice, as many civil officiants are also religious people, they take it upon themselves to embellish the ritual of the marriage and make it more like a religious event.

All they really need to hear is an "I DO" but many go beyond. There is often no oversight once a person is appointed to be a marriage officiant for the state.

Atheists must meet all the legal requirements for getting married in the particular place. There are never any religious requirements for a civil marriage. They must be of age, produce ID, and follow the requirements on the license....just like everyone else.

They get married wherever the **** they want to by the Justice of the Peace or a captain, or hell even an ordained minister. The ceremony doesn't matter, just the paper you sign.

They are under the covenant of the United States' law like everyone else who gets married.

They get married, just like anyone else, with a minister or other official as a legal and emotional commitment to each other. Despite what many of you might say, marriage was around long before Jesus. People used to marry and divorce like it was nothing. Marriage in the ancient world was political, and financial, not religious.

In the United States, marriage is a legal contract as well as a sacrosanct union. Many choose only the legal contract.

Like everyone else, atheists get a legal marriage license.

Marriage is a civil union sanctioned by the state, it does not require a covenant. Where were you raised, anyhow, that you do not know this?

The same place as anyone else who wants a civil marriage.

A celebrant, JP, a registrar are all legally binding and don't need a religious reason, just one that's seen as valid by the law of the land.

where - wherever they want, garden, courthouse, park, ship, plane, you name it, except leave out the church bit.

whom - a marriage celebrant or person authorised under the laws of the the land to perform such things.

covenant - laws of the land.
