What's that story about a guy who gave up looking for treasure a few feet away and then came back years later?

I heard a story or illustration about a fellow who was searching for a diamond or Egyptian tomb or something, gave up, then came back decades later and found it just a few feet from where he'd left off looking. I think he then died a couple weeks later.

Update:

Thanks, but that's not the one I was looking for.

    The Alchemist, by Paulo Coelho.

I read it twice. In the first sitting. I've read it monthly since then (three years). Glad you're picking it up again.
