Terriers are much better at it, that's what they were bred to do (chase and kill small-medium sized animals). I would look into a Rat Terrier.

I suppose that some Labs might have an interest in chasing down rats. That is not what Labs were bred for, however.

Lab Retrievers have a "soft mouth" for the purposes of retrieving game birds that have been shot down. The soft mouth prevents the dog from damaging the bird upon retrieval.

If you want a dog that is good for dealing with vermin, most of the terrier breeds (e.g. Rat Terrier, get it?), Dachshunds and others are excellent.

  • Ever hear of a Rat Terrier? They got the name for what they are good at catching not for their size. Labs are not adapt at catching rats.

I think cats would be more efficient at it. Either way, you want to be careful since rats can be a bit feisty and bite, carrying disease with them. Set up some traps.

Umm perhaps you are looking at the wrong species, maybe you should get a cat instead.
