6 pints of a 20 percent solution of alcohol in water are mixed with 4 pints of a 10 percent alcohol in water solution. The percentage alcohol in the new solution is?

    ANSWER: There is 16% of alcohol in thenew solution.

    Step 1: Write the generic formula

    Percentage in alcohol = (Total alcohol/ Total mixed solution) x 100%

    Total solution = 6 pint + 4 pint = 10 pint. -->(because you mixed them.)

    Step 2: Find the values of alcohol amount

    n word problem "of" usually indicates multiplication.

    20% of alcohol in 6 pint = 6 pint * (.20) = 1.2 pint

    10% of alcohol in 4 pint = 4 pint * (.10) = 0.4 pint

    Add two together because you mixed them. You get 1.6 pint of total alcohol in the new solution.

    Step 3: Now plug these calculated values into the top equation.

    Percentage in alcohol = (1.6 pint/ 10 pints) x 100% = 16%

    you have to do:

    6(.2)+ 4(.1)=10x

    1.2+.4=10x

    1.6=10x

    x=.16

    So it is 16%
