Here's what books I used...
These three are by Cisco Press
CCNA Official Exam Certification Library(Exam 640-802) Third Edition
CCNA Flash Cards and Exam Practice Pack (3rd Edition)
CCNA Portable Command Guide (2nd Edition)
This one is by Exam Cram
CCNA Practice Questions (Exam 640-802) (3rd Edition)
I'd say at the least, get the Certification Library, which is two books, and the Practice Questions from Exam Cram. I think its best to study from at least two different sources, then you'll get more variety of practice questions to study from which will increase your chances of passing the real exam.
Also you should have some way of practicing the commands, you'll NEED to know some of these commands for the exam. If you don't have any routers/switches or a simulator, you can at least practice typing the commands in notepad or something to help you memorize them. Boson makes a network simulator that I hear is really good, called Netsim, but costs like $200+, but from my experience, using a simulator will help a lot.
If you haven't studied this stuff before, you should give yourself 6 months probably. But that could be shorter or longer depending how much you study. Just make sure you know just about everything and be able to answer all of the practuce questions.
