    Not everyone in Australia does.

    Victorians pronounce it MAL-ben

The rest of us say MEL-Ben

    The yanks say MILL-born

We say other place names funny too:

Lake Eyre is said as in Air not Ire.

Sydneysiders say SIN-ney everyone esle says SYD-ney

Queenslanders say bris-BANE, everyone else says BRIS-bane.

Novocastrians say NEW-cassel everyone else say NEW-carsel.

Western Australians say AL-bany (AL as pal) everyone else says ALL-bany

New South Welshmen say WAR-hope not WAR-cho-pea

I guess its a personal preference, probably coming from our British connections. Half the place names on a map of Britain are pronounced nothing at all like the way they are written.

    Worcester - is WOOST-er not WAR-cess-ter

    Gloucester is GLOSS-ter not GLUE-cess-ter

    Leicester is LESS-ter not LEE-cess-ter

    Edinburgh is EDIN-boro not EDIN-berg

    Norwich is NO-rich not NOR-wich

Each to their own i guess.

That is a really good question!

I don't know why we do that. I think it is just our accent.

I have wondered this myself too......

Its the same with Brisbane too. If you said it phonetically, you would say Bris-bain instead of Bris-ben or Bris-ban.

Americans seem to say Mel-born, I've noticed.....

    He he =P
