Why doesn't IE 7/8 load a new web page in the open tab?? It always opens a new tab!?

OK, IE 7/8 has really been irking me lately. I use Firefox 3.5 mostly, but still need to use IE for certain sites. With IE, I can load a new tab - pictured here: http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b119/d... and the about:tab screen loads. Then, assuming I type a URL into the address bar, instead of obviously using the open tab (showing about:tabs), IE opens yet another tab to load the page - pictured here: http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b119/d...

Is there a way to force IE to act like Firefox, i.e. force IE to use the front/open tab to load new pages, and only open a new tab when I click to open a new tab?
Update: jmorge: I tried what you suggested, but it didnt fix the problem. I think I may try to reinstall IE 8...
Update 2: Calixin: A reinstall of IE 8 didnt fix the problem either... :(
