No. There is little logical involved in this trade. Didn't the Dodgers re-sign Furcal to a multiyear deal anyway? The Mets can afford to sign Reyes and Holliday or Bay too. They have 33 million coming off the books (if they decline Putz and don't offer Maine arbitration). They'll likely use half on a position player like Holliday (maybe same 7 year/119MM contract as Beltran got a few years ago). Or they could get creative and try using 2yr/14MM on Bengie Molina, plus another 8-10MM on re-signing Carlos Delgado, or pursuing Bobby Abreu or Chone Figgins, or Carl Crawford via trade. The other half could be used on a John Lackey, Jason Marquis or Erik Beard + Octavio Dotel or Brandon Lyon. They could have had Manny last off-season if they wanted to. With all of his baggage, no one knew about the women's drugs or steroids at the time. He's old and has a big ego. Reyes is young and has a big ego - so he's better in that regard. Reyes is very valuable - if healthy and his head is on straight. I just don't think Jerry Manuel is the manager for this club. Nor is Omar Minaya the GM. They need a clean house. Most of their roster is in place. Some touching up is necessary, but nothing drastic.
