The Colony of North Carolina was settled in 1653 by then citizens of the Virginia Colony. In 1663 king Charles II of England granted a Charter to eight nobles to settle the area immediately south of Virginia. This was called the Carolina Colony and included the previous settlement. Internal bickering resulted in the Crown taking control of the colony in 1729 and forming two separate colonies known as North and South Carolina Colony.
