Well, if your budget is $200 tops, you could, theoretically, get both...
http://www.airsoftpost.com/version-agmjg-aps2-type... for the L96 (I know a guy who has one, it's not bad, but not more than you'd expect form and $80 airsoft gun)
And, as a backup (which all snipers should have both for convenience and to more easily respect minimum engagement distances, you could get http://www.airsoftpost.com/preorder-09302009-versi... or http://www.airsoftpost.com/metal-gear-tokyo-marui-... ... Or a full sized AK, but that'd be a lot to carry around along with the L96

Ummm...personally, an Ak is one of the more commonly used airsoft guns. I have one, and so far it has worked well, I think some of the best places to get an airsoft gun would be. I am also warning you.
ALWAYS GET A METAL GEARBOX. ABS plastic on the outside is strong, but metal would be best. The next gun I think I am gonna get because of the sickness is the JG S.T.A.R. on shorty. Here is the link,
and also if you could give more of a price range, because Classic Army, Tokyo Marui, A&K, G&G, and KWA. Here are some links to guns that I like, but are a little more on the pricey side.
There are also some notes on the page on picking out your first AEG, hope this helped.

If it's only for display, then buy a normal one and spray paint it black, which is what you see. It is illegal to sell bb guns without orange tips, and if a member of the police sees you with it in public, then they can shoot you in order to protect others. (the orange tip is so it looks different to real guns)

In airsoft, manufacturer is everything. It doesn't matter what you tell us you're looking at if you don't give a brand name along with it.
Do you have a budget? Any models you want specifically?

i always suggest getting an m4/m16 variant since they will be very easy to upgrade/replace parts. g&g is an outstanding manufacturer and they have a cheaper "sportline".
