- The Mortal Instruments series. Book one is City of Bones by Cassandra Clare. Blurb on the back of the book: It’s after dark in New York City, and Clary Fray is seeing things. The best-looking guy in the nightclub just stabbed a boy to death – but the victim has just vanished into thin air. Her mother has just disappeared, and a hideous monster is lurking in her apartment. With her life spiraling into darkness, Clary realises that she has just stumbled into an invisible war between ancient demonic forces and the secretive Shadowhunters – a war in which she has a fateful role to play…
“It’s Vampires versus Werewolves in Harlem, while sexy demon hunters prowl through downtown clubs and Brooklyn coffeehouses – City Of Bones is epic urban fantasy at its demented, delightful best.”
This sounds a lot like Vampires and Werewolves, but the entire story is about the shadowhunters, and it's non-stop action. They run into angry monsters, get captured, and have to kill filthy demons constantly with seraph blades, etc. I absolutely loved this series and could not put it down. It is a must read! It's really funny too, because the characters are just hilarious, particularly the boy, Jace. Here are some examples in the book (not trying to convince you at all, am I? :)
I don't want to be a man," said Jace. "I want to be an angst-ridden teenager who can't confront his own inner demons and takes it out verbally on other people instead."
"Well," said Luke, "you're doing a fantastic job."
Jace: A Diary with no drawings of me in it? Where are the torrid fantasies? The romance covers? The-
Clary: Do all girls you meet fall in love with you?
"Don't order any of the faerie food," said Jace, looking at her over the top of his menu. "It tends to make humans a little crazy. One minute you're munching a faerie plumb, the next minute you're running naked down Madison Avenue with antlers on your head. Not," he added hastily, "that this has ever happened to me."
"'That's why when major badasses greet each other in movies, they don't say anything, they just nod. The nod means, 'I' am a badass, and I recognize that you, too, are a badass,' but they don't say anything because they're Wolverine and Magneto and it would mess up their vibe to explain." –Simon
"It means 'Shadowhunters: Looking Better in Black Than the Widows of our Enemies Since 1234.'" – Jace
haha! This is a fantastic series that is always unpredictable. If you read any series over the holidays, this would have to be the one!!
I've read them all (and I still wish it wasn't over)
