Most of what is mentioned above is done by the states.
The US government should and does allow for a great defense (Thank you to our Military) and that is the major goal.
The states could not exist without some national regulatory agencies for transportation, laws, etc.. It's the balance between the states, the national government and the individual that we all argue about.
Most people forget that the government is the population and they produce nothing. They cannot give out more than they take. We taxpayers are their only resource unless they plunder other countries.
On the average you will get less than you put into your government. Social Security and Medicare are forced savings programs. Most of us will put in more than you get back.

Public schools, transportation, highways, parks; civil order in the form of police, armed forces for our defense, a legal structure, a constitution to establish common rights and responsibilities, and a government to oversee it all.
Now, why not ask what being a united group of states does to hurt its population? (You might start with Lincoln's war which killed about 20% of the male population of the South and devastated the region economically for over a hundred years.)

Let's see, do you ever drive on a road, use electricity, go to public school, rely on the fire department, watch television or listen to radio, expect to dial 911 and get help?
That is just a tiny portion of what your tax dollars do.
As for what is provided by States, every state receives federal funding. National things like the 911 system is funded by federal dollars.
Nearly every hospital and school system receives federal funding.

To protect America, all the other answers you have are what is provided by each individual state by state taxes.
Well that is the way it is supposed to be until this government took over

You have a constitutional state, with the rule of law (police, judicial system, independent judges), you have education, you have a free democracy. That all comes with a price tag.

More than I can answer here. That's why I don't understand the sudden hate of Socialism.
If you get mugged are you going to tell the cop you don't want help because Socialism sucks?
I doubt it.
