why are midnight flights called 'red eye'?

They call them "red eye" because people have a hard time getting a good night's sleep since they are on a plane during the time they would normally sleep. When you're tired, you get bloodshot eyes. Thus the flight is called a "red eye".

Because the flights are overnight, people that are on the flights usually do not sleep. Majority of people that do not get sleep will have red eyes in the morning. This is why midnight flights are called 'red eye' flights.

People stay up all night in airports/on planes with these late flights and their eyes look tired and bloodshot as a result..Hence the expression "red eye." There is a cafe in downtown Indianapolis that stays open all night after the bars close it's called the "Red Eye Cafe." Same concept.
