My friend told me that when two young people in Japan love each other, but can't be together for social reasons or whatever, then they commit suicide together.

It has happened in Japanese ancient history, but it doesn't happen currently. Suicide is not a dishonorable way to die in Japan, so the lovers could be together in death, but not in life.
