why does diet coke floot higher then normal coke?

My science teacher did an experiment and put water in a container and he put a diet coke can(empty) and a normal coke can(empty) and he asked us why the diet coke can floots higher then the normal coke can? can someone help me out why that is??

    Are you sure the cans were empty? The usual way of doing the experiment is to float full cans. The diet coke floats because it has no sugar. Artifical sweetener is lighter than sugar, which is in the real coke. If the cans were empty, it would be because the real coke can was made of a heavier material.
