Generally speaking, We don't have the facts about what happened during past events, at best we have witness accounts but witnesses don't know it all and can also have jumped into incorrect conclusions. Other than that we have stories told through generations before being put into writing and that's not a reliable source of information. By taking what we know about the event and applying scientific tests we can come much closer to the real truth and in some cases is can also help us understand the people that was there and how they acted and why.
