Just 5? Are you out of your mind? If this is a homework assignment, you're going to have to get them from class notes or something that tells you what your teacher/prof thinks were "the five major" languages.

From a programming languages class, we always look at things like Algol because it was one of the first. Ada was another important language.

The US economy would completely melt down if it were not for COBOL. There are hundreds of millions of lines of it running today.

The US military would grind to a halt if it were not for FORTRAN. Many simulations and key military computers still run programs written in FORTRAN for one reason or another. Financial markets also depend on it.

Most major commercial operating systems are written in C and C++.

Java is pretty significant. C#.NET is just derivative. Typical Microsoft—embrace, extend, exterminate.

There are literally dozens of "significant" languages, and no two educated people are going to give you the same top five. So you may as well figure out what answer your teacher wants and give it to her.
