"It works" and "It helps", are these synonyms?

"It works" and "It helps"

Are these two words synonyms to each other?

Update:

If not: could someone clarify?

Update 2:

Addition: I mean these words in the following context:

"Loosing weight helps"

"Loosing weight works"

Both sentence are saying that it helps/works to loose weight in order to prevent certain illnesses.

    No.

"It works" means it functions (the opposite of not functioning or not fitting).

"It helps" is less definite. It means that it contributes toward solving the problem but it doesn't actually solve the problem by itself.

    No

Synonyms are words that are the same or similar in meaning and you can replace one word with the other. See if you can replace works with helps in this sentence and still have the same meaning.

The television was broken for weeks, now it works.

The television was broken for weeks, now it ______

You don't get the same meaning so therefore there are not synonyms.

Examples of synonyms would be vacant and empty

The bathroom is vacant so you can go in

The bathroom is empty so you can go in.
