Greg was a climber who wanted to climb the Karakoram 2, also called K2, in Pakistan. After a failed attempt, he is found by his porter, Mouzafer Ali, frozen and disoriented, he is taken to Ali's village where the mullah, Haji Ali, welcomes him. He is nursed back to health, becomes enamored with the ways of the people and takes a special interest in the children. Haji Ali takes him to where the children learn their lessons, a mountain ledge with dirt on the ground where the children go with sticks and repeat, in the dirt with their sticks, the lessons they have been taught by a teacher who comes once in a while. Mortenson promises to build a school in Korphe and goes back to America. To raise funds for the school, Greg writes 580 letters, all to wealthy Americans and only recieves one response with a donation of 100 dollars from an old college alumnus. His mother also launches a Pennies for Pakistan campaign at Westside Elementary School and raised $623.45 for her son's work. Tom Vaughn introduces Mortenson to Dr. Jean Hoerni, a Swiss-born physicist, who would donate $12,000 dollars so that Greg can build the school in Korphe. Also note that Greg is living in his car which he named "La Bamba", and lots of other hotels during his journey so that he wouldnt spend alot of money. Greg sells La Bamba and goes to Pakistan so he can build the Korphe School. Unforunately, Haji Ali explains that before they can build a school, the have to build a bridge before they can build the school. Greg contacts Jean again and Hoerni gives him an additional $10,000 for the bridge. AFter the bridge is built, the Korphe School goes under construction and is built. Greg takes the photo of the school to Jean Hoerni, who is dieing in the hospital. Jean offers Mortenson a spot as director of the CAI (Central Asia Institute), a charitable organization funded by Hoerni, and $20,000 to go towards the organization. Also, Greg has met his wife, Tara Bishop, who stay by his side through it all. The CAI continues to build schools in Pakistan and Afghanistan. In one chapter, Greg visits Waziristan and gets captured. He is held for eight days and let free and given a bag full of rupees for his school building. When funds dipped low Greg struggled raising money with his conventions. During one, he meets U.S. Representative Mary Bono, who would later introduce him to U.S. Secretary of Defense, Donald Rumsfeld. Rumsfeld offered Mortenson 2.2 million dollars to build schools next to extremist madrassas, but Greg declines the offer because he knew he couldn't use military money if he wanted to survive in Pakistan. So, with funds still low, he meets Kevin Fedarko, a former editor for Outside magazine. Fedarko wrote a story about Greg’s mission to fight terrorism and got an old friend, Lamar Graham, who was then the managing editor of Parade magazine, to publish it in Parade. The readers of the Parade magazine would contribute more than one million dollars toward the CIA’s funds, allowing Greg to continue on his journey.

"If you want to thrive in Baltistan, you must respect our ways. The first time you share tea with a Balti, you are a stranger. The second time you take tea, you are an honored guest. The third tim you share a cup of tea, you become family, and for our family, we are prepared to do anything, even die. Doctor Greg, you must take time to share three cups of tea. We may be uneducated. But we are not stupid. We have lived and survived here for a long time." -- Haji Ali

(I'm still searching for a chapter by chapter summary. . .)
