I don't know about best 5, but these are my favourites. I'm leaving out post-metal bands, but sometimes the line between them is unclear.

Slint - "Spiderland"

Russian Circles - "Enter"

Mono - "You Are There"

Godspeed You! Black Emperor - "Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas To Heaven"

Red Sparowes - "Every Red Heart Shines Toward The Red Sun"
