If you're using a windows machine then windows has an inbuilt service called Wireless Zero Configuration.
This is an inbuilt function which detects wireless networks. You can check that it is started by going Start > Run and typing 'services.msc' (without quotes). Find the service name and if it's disabled or stopped double click the row and change the start up type to 'Automatic' and then hit 'Start'.
If you have an inbuilt card you will most likely have the necessary drivers installed. If you have an external card you'll need to install the drivers supplied with it in order for it to work.

If the wireless card is installed, you don't need a program. The OS detects it.

Well, there is one built in windows. This is the one you probably have to use if the network card is internal. Single click the wLan symbol on your toolbar, and click connect to network.
