She didn't make Edmund ridiculous when he wanted to be a Clergyman.
Anyway, yes, he was more than a bit ridiculous. But she was definitely using him as her main target to ridicule the upper society.

It's been a long time since I read it, and I don't remember Mr. Collins. But Jane Austen was famous for poking fun at the clergymen in her stories. She either made them out to be pompous idiots, or happy go lucky idiots with no imaginations at all. I'm betting she didn't like clergymen.
