    A novel is a book that is a story. It can be fiction or non-fiction, or partially fiction. A book is a book on just about any subject. It can be a science book, a medical book, a dictionary, a law book, a novel, a dictionary, a math book, a kids' book. Hard cover or soft cover.

    A novel is a specific type of book: a fictional story (and somewhat longer, since if it's too short it will be labeled a "short story")
