This is the generic name of a drug called Neurontin. This drug is an anticonvulsant, which means it is used to treat seizures, and it is also used to treat nerve pain. If you do not have nerve pain, which is a burning sensation that usually moves into the hips, thighs, and legs, then this medication will not work for your back pain.
I am taking this drug for nerve pain following spinal fusion, laminectomy, and decompression surgery. I may have some nerve damage, and I get intense burning pain, that is sensitive to the slightest touch, in my thigh.I take another medication for the pain (from the surgery, I am three weeks post-op) in my back.
Do not suddenly stop taking this medication. Step down the doses gradually, and a doctor's advice is strongly advised. If you suddenly stop taking this medication, you are likely to experience some not so fun withdrawal symptoms.
If you are having back pain that does not respond to over the counter pain/anti-inflamatory drugs, then it would not hurt to see your doctor.
Just call your family doctor and start from there.
I take this medication, and the information is from the leaflet that I got with the medication
