Because families are at home more with school starting and what not. Stopping these shows during the summer is TV's way of trying to get people out and about instead of sitting at home watching TV.

I believe it has to do with the end of vacation season and the start of a new school year. They want to attract more viewers, who are all back at home now, with slick new shows; and advertisers are getting primed for the all important Christmas buying orgy.
