Any dog can bite if they are startled and feel that they have to be *on the defensive*, not just a Dobe. What do you mean by a longer life span than other large dogs? Do you mean 15 years, 10, what? First off, the Dobe is considered a medium size breed. Second, they are prone to a ton of health problems, such as VwD, Thyroid, Hip Dysplasia, DCM, Wobblers Syndrome, Bloat, dilute Alopcea, Autoammune disordors, and several other possibilities. If you decide on a Dobe, find a reputable breeder that at least tests for genetic defects. As for the longevity...well, I hate to inform you of this but the average life span of a Dobe in the US is now down to 6 1/2 years. This is mostly due to poor breeding. This is why it is important to find a breeder who tests, AND breeds for health and longevity. Google: DPCA and you will find a breeder referral list for your area. Also, they are NOT guard dogs, they are watchful, alert, and *can be* protective. A guard dog is a professionally trained dog.
